Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)

Distress Alerts: The GMDSS enables vessels to send distress signals in emergencies to alert nearby ships or shore stations. Safety Broadcasts: Transmits navigational warnings, weather information, and distress alerts to improve safety at sea. Automatic Identification System (AIS): Used to track the position of nearby vessels in real-time for collision avoidance and monitoring.

Satellite Communication

Global Coverage: Satellite phones and broadband systems, provide global communication for remote areas where other radio systems may not work. Email and Internet Access: Allows vessels to stay connected for operational communications, reporting, and even personal communication. Tracking and Monitoring: Allows fleet managers and authorities to track vessel locations and conditions in real-time.

 Marine Telephony (Voice Communication)

Voice Over IP (VoIP): Provides cost-effective and high-quality voice communication over the internet, often used on large vessels or fleets. Telephone Integration: Integration of onboard phone systems with satellite networks for direct voice communication to shore.

VHF (Very High Frequency) Radio

Short-range Communication: Typically used for communication with nearby vessels and shore stations. Channel 16 for Emergency: A dedicated emergency channel that ensures communication during distress situations. Digital Selective Calling (DSC): Allows vessels to send automated distress alerts and location information to other ships or stations.

 MF/HF (Medium Frequency/High Frequency) Radio

Longer-range Communication: MF/HF radios are used for communication over long distances, essential for vessels that operate beyond VHF range. Single Sideband (SSB) Communication: Enables clearer long-distance voice and data transmission, especially useful for remote areas. Weather Reports and Navigation Warnings: Provides broadcasts of weather information, routing guidance, and other maritime information for safety.
